~ The Prairie Dogs ~

Heart of the Wild Sanctuary

Prairie Dogs at HOTWS

My daughter, Amanda, has rescued several neglected prairie dogs over the last 6 years. She has developed & created specialized habitats, food & toys to help keep these small and extremely active little creatures happy and healthy. This is her place to share information.

Prairie Dogs, Ground Squirrels, Hedgehogs, Rabbits

Additional Information

Along with the prairie dogs, she has rescued, and sometimes rehomed after rehab, ground squirrels, wild squirrels, hedgehogs, and other animals of this nature. We both have our specialties, and this area would be hers.

In the beginning she found it very difficult to find any reliable or experienced information sources about the feeding & care for them, including habitat information. We are research freaks, and so thru that she came up with a plan, and over time she developed several habitats, feeding recipes (for lack of a better word), and stimulation toys just for them. Each species has their own type of need, as they are all different. Prairie Dogs in particular are VERY socially inclined, and NEED interaction, love, and companionship. Think about it ... in the wild they live in huge colonies with many family members, and as domestic pets they require that same familial bond.

In sharing information here we hope that it helps others understand how to take care of their pets in a better & healthier way. She does plan on creating species specific toys available for sale at some point, and sharing her food recipes for them.

If you wish to know more, or have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Their Favorite Prairie Dog Toy

The Prairie Dogs at HOTW. Their names are Winston (the Terrible), Scarlet (miss priss attitude), and Twinkie (the fattie). Amanda makes these wonderful toys for them all of the time to keep them busy, because a bored prairie dog is a naughty prairie dog lol. This type is a favorite lol.
